Our Story

Why Puffin Services exists — and who it is for.

Across British Columbia, there are families navigating some of the most important moments of their lives — entirely alone. A new mother recovering from birth, with no family nearby to hold the baby while she sleeps. A senior spending days without hearing another voice. A newcomer to Canada, building a life in a place where everything is unfamiliar.

These are not rare stories. They are happening in every neighbourhood across BC. And for too long, the support these families needed simply did not exist — not in a way that was personal, accessible, and truly community-driven.

Puffin Services was created to fill that gap. Not as a corporation, not as a cold agency, but as a warm and genuine extension of the community itself. We believe care should feel like a neighbour showing up at your door — with a meal, a kind word, or a steady hand.

From postpartum care to senior companionship, from community matching to helping families navigate complex systems — Puffin Services is here for every stage of life. We are starting in the Fraser Valley because that is our home. But our vision reaches every corner of British Columbia.

Founded in Abbotsford, BC. 🐦

Casual / On-Call

Pay: $25–$28/hr  |  Min shift: 4 hours  |  Location: Client homes, Abbotsford & Fraser Valley

About the Role

  • Help with older siblings when needed
  • Share gentle guidance on newborn care routines with first-time parents

What We Are Looking For

  • Warm, nurturing, patient, and non-judgmental personality
  • Comfortable working independently in client homes with minimal supervision
  • Culturally sensitive — our clients come from many backgrounds
  • Punjabi or Hindi language skills are a significant asset in our Fraser Valley community

  • Good communication skills and the ability to connect with diverse people
  • Multilingual skills welcome — Punjabi, Hindi, Tagalog, and other languages are assets

Pay: $28–$38/hr  |  Min shift: 1.5 hours  |  Location: Client homes, schools & community, Fraser Valley

About the Role
As a Behaviour Interventionist (BI) at Puffin Services, you will work one-on-one with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. You will implement structured therapy programs developed by our registered Behaviour Consultant (BC), helping children build communication, social, and daily living skills. What You Will Do

  • Implement individualised behaviour intervention plans as designed by our registered BC
  • Deliver structured ABA-based therapy sessions in client homes, schools, or community settings
  • Use positive reinforcement strategies to build new skills and reduce challenging behaviours

  • Communicate regularly with the supervising BC, parents, and the Puffin team
  • Attend team meetings and ongoing training sessions provided by Puffin
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality at all times

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience working with children with autism or developmental disabilities — this is essential

  • RBT (Registered Behaviour Technician) certification is a strong asset

Why Join Puffin: Flexible on-call scheduling. Consistent and MCFD-funded client base. Full BC supervision and ongoing training provided. Competitive pay at $28–$38/hr. Meaningful work with real measurable outcomes for every child you support.

Requirements: Vulnerable Sector criminal record check. Minimum high school diploma. ABA coursework or RBT certification strongly preferred. First Aid certification an asset.

🗣️ SLP Assistant (SLPA)

Casual / Sessional

Pay: $32–$40/hr  |  Min shift: 1 session (1 hour)  |  Location: Client homes, Fraser Valley

About the Role
As an SLP Assistant (SLPA) with Puffin Services, you will deliver evidence-based speech-language therapy sessions to children with autism, developmental disabilities, and communication disorders — in the comfort of their own homes. You will work under the direction of a registered Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and play a direct role in improving children's communication, language, and social interaction skills. MCFD and CYDB funding means consistent, predictable demand for your sessions.

What You Will Do

  • Implement speech-language intervention programs as directed by the supervising SLP
  • Deliver individual therapy sessions targeting language development, articulation, social communication, and AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) as required
  • Use evidence-based strategies and therapy materials in home settings
  • Collect accurate data on client progress and complete detailed session notes
  • Communicate regularly with the supervising SLP about client progress and any concerns
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality at all times
  • Participate in periodic supervision meetings with the SLP

What We Are Looking For

  • Completion of an accredited SLPA diploma or equivalent post-secondary program
  • Registration with CSHBC (College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC) or eligible to register
  • RASP (Registry of Autism Service Providers) registration or eligibility — MCFD clients require this
  • Experience working with pediatric clients, particularly children with autism or language delays
  • Ability to implement therapy plans independently following SLP direction
  • Organised, detail-oriented, and consistent in data collection and session documentation
  • Warm, engaging communication style that children and families respond well to
  • Valid driver licence and reliable vehicle for home visit sessions

Why Join Puffin: Flexible sessional scheduling that fits around your other commitments. Strong and consistent MCFD-funded client demand. Clients matched to your geographic area to minimise travel. Highly competitive pay at $32–$40/hr. Professional SLP supervision provided. Meaningful work with measurable outcomes for every family you support.

Requirements: SLPA diploma or equivalent. CSHBC registration or eligible. RASP registration or eligible. Criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector screening. Valid Class 5 driver licence.

Casual / Sessional

Pay: $32–$40/hr  |  Min shift: 1 session (1 hour)  |  Location: Client homes, Fraser Valley

About the Role
As an OT Assistant (OTA) with Puffin Services, you will deliver occupational therapy sessions to children with autism, developmental disabilities, and sensory processing challenges in their home environment. Working under the supervision of a registered Occupational Therapist (OT), you will help children develop the skills they need to participate in daily activities, school, and play. MCFD and CYDB funding supports consistent session demand.

What You Will Do

  • Implement individual OT intervention programs as directed by the supervising OT

  • Use therapeutic activities and exercises in natural home environments
  • Adapt therapy materials and activities to each child's needs and interests
  • Collect accurate session data and complete detailed progress notes
  • Communicate progress and concerns to the supervising OT
  • Support families in understanding how to carry over therapy strategies at home

  • RASP registration or eligibility — required for MCFD-funded sessions
  • Experience working with pediatric clients, especially children with autism or sensory processing needs
  • Understanding of sensory integration, fine motor development, and childhood occupations
  • Creative, adaptable, and skilled at engaging children in therapeutic activities
  • Organised and detail-oriented in data collection and session documentation
  • Valid driver licence and own vehicle for home visit sessions

Why Join Puffin: Flexible sessional work around your schedule. MCFD-funded consistent demand. Geographic client matching. Competitive pay at $32–$40/hr. OT supervision provided. Meaningful, measurable impact for every child and family you work with.

Requirements: OTA diploma from recognised Canadian institution. COTBC registration or eligible. RASP registration or eligible. Criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector screening. Valid Class 5 driver licence.

Loneliness is one of the greatest challenges facing seniors and adults living alone. Our Puffin Care companions provide genuine, meaningful one-to-one companionship — not rushed visits, but real time spent with another person who cares.

This service is non-medical companionship and social support. For hands-on personal care such as bathing or dressing, please see our Private Home Support & Respite service.

What companions do:

  • Regular visits for conversation, tea, and company

  • Grocery shopping and errand runs

  • Pharmacy pickup and prescription management reminders
  • Help with light tasks around the home
  • Engagement in hobbies and interests
  • Support for seniors who live far from family
  • Regular check-ins and safety monitoring

Every companion is personally screened, background-checked, and matched to your personality, interests, and language preference. We do not rotate companions randomly — we build consistent, trusting relationships.

Private Home Support & Respite

Join Waitlist

Our Private Home Support service provides hands-on personal care and respite in the comfort of your home — giving clients the help they need with essential daily tasks, while giving family caregivers the rest and relief they deserve.

This is different from our Companion & Community Care service. Home Support is personal care — bathing, grooming, dressing, mobility, and more. Respite is temporary relief for family caregivers who need a break. Both are available under this service.

Respite Care: If you are a family caregiver looking after an elderly parent, a child with disabilities, or a loved one with complex needs — you deserve a break. Our respite workers step in so you can rest, attend appointments, or simply have time for yourself. Funded through BC At Home Program, Community Living BC, or private pay.

What Private Home Support includes:

  • Bathing, showering, and personal hygiene
  • Dressing and grooming assistance
  • Mobility support — transfers, walking, positioning
  • Medication reminders (non-medical)
  • Incontinence care and catheter monitoring
  • Light meal preparation and feeding assistance
  • Range of motion exercises as directed
  • Vital signs monitoring and documentation
  • Skin care and pressure sore prevention
  • Communication with family and care team

All Private Home Support workers are screened, background-checked, and have completed recognized HCA training programs. We carefully match each caregiver to each client based on needs, personality, and language preference.

Who this service is for: Seniors who need daily personal care assistance, adults recovering from surgery or illness, individuals with physical disabilities, and anyone who needs reliable hands-on support to live safely and comfortably at home.

💰 Did You Know? The Government May Pay for Your Childcare

The BC Affordable Child Care Benefit — and most BC families have never heard of it.

The Short Version

If your family earns under $111,000 per year, the BC government may pay a large portion of your childcare costs every month — including babysitters and nannies hired through Puffin Services. Many families get hundreds of dollars back per month and never knew this existed.

What Is the BC Affordable Child Care Benefit?

The BC Affordable Child Care Benefit is a monthly government payment that helps eligible BC families cover the cost of childcare. It is administered by the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care and is completely separate from the federal Canada Child Benefit.

The benefit is based on your family income, the number of children you have, and the type of care you use. The less you earn, the more you receive.

👶 Who qualifies?

Families with children who use eligible childcare — including in-home babysitters and nannies unrelated to the child.

💵 How much?

Families earning under $45,000 may receive full funding. Families earning up to $111,000 may qualify for partial support.

📅 How often?

Monthly payments that go directly to the family or are credited against your childcare provider payments.

✅ Does Puffin qualify?

Yes. Our childcare and babysitting workers qualify as long as they are unrelated to your child — which all Puffin workers are.

How Much Could You Receive?

Here is a rough guide based on family income. Exact amounts depend on your specific situation.

Annual Family IncomeApproximate Monthly Benefit
Under $45,000Full funding — up to $900+/month per child
$45,000 – $65,000Significant partial funding
$65,000 – $85,000Moderate partial funding
$85,000 – $111,000Smaller partial funding
Over $111,000May not qualify — check eligibility

Who Does NOT Qualify

To be clear and honest with you — not every situation qualifies. The benefit does not apply if:

  • Your family income is over $111,000 per year
  • The caregiver is a family member who lives with you
  • The care is occasional or recreational (not regular childcare)
  • You do not have a valid BC address and eligible immigration status

If you are unsure whether you qualify — contact us. We will help you check before you apply so you are not wasting your time.

🎁 The Puffin Referral Program

Share Puffin with someone who needs it. Earn real rewards when they do.

The Simple Version

Complete 10 hours of any Puffin service and your 11th hour is free — once per service per household. Then refer a friend — every time a friend you refer also completes 10 hours, you earn another free hour. No cap on referrals. The more people you help find Puffin, the more you earn.

Part 1 — The Puffin Promise

Every Puffin client earns one free hour after completing their first 10 hours of any service. This is our thank-you for trusting us with your family.

ServiceFree Hour After
Postpartum & Newborn Support10 hours → 1 free hour
Companion & Community Care10 hours → 1 free hour
Private Home Support & Respite10 hours → 1 free hour
Childcare & Babysitting10 hours → 1 free hour
After-School Care10 hours → 1 free hour
Important: The free hour applies once per service per household address. If you move home or change services, the reward resets for that new service.

Part 2 — Referral Rewards

Know someone who could use Puffin? When you refer them and they complete their first 10 hours — you earn an extra free hour. Every single time. No cap.

1

You refer a friend

Tell them about Puffin. Ask them to mention your name when they join our waitlist or book their first service.

2

They complete 10 hours

Your friend uses any Puffin service and reaches 10 hours. That is when your reward is triggered.

3

You earn a free hour

We add a free hour to your account. No expiry. Use it anytime on any service. Refer more friends — earn more hours.

Example: You refer 5 friends. Each one completes 10 hours. You earn 5 free hours — worth $175–$210 depending on your service. That is a meaningful saving for simply telling people about something that helped you.

Part 3 — Therapy Referral (SLPA & OTA)

If your child receives Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) or Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) sessions through Puffin — our referral reward is even better.

What you earn

Refer a family to Puffin therapy and earn one completely free SLPA or OTA session — worth $80–$90.

The condition

The referred family must stay with Puffin for at least 3 months AND you must still be an active Puffin client at the time of redemption.

Why 3 months?

We want to make sure the referred family is genuinely benefiting from Puffin — not just dropping in for one session. This protects the quality of our community.

No cap

Refer as many families as you like. Each one that stays 3 months earns you one free therapy session. Unlimited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simply ask your friend to mention your name when they join our waitlist or book their first session. We track referrals manually and will confirm with both of you when the reward is triggered.
Yes. Free hours earned through referrals can be applied to any Puffin service — they are not locked to the service your friend used.
No. Your free hours never expire as long as you remain an active Puffin client. If you pause services for more than 6 months, unused hours may need to be reconfirmed — just contact us and we will sort it out.
Absolutely. Every Puffin client can refer friends and earn hours. There is no hierarchy — everyone earns the same rewards for the same effort.
The referral reward is only triggered when your friend completes 10 hours. If they use fewer hours, no reward is earned — but they are still welcome at Puffin and you can still refer others.
No limit at all. Refer as many people as you like. Every friend who completes 10 hours earns you a free hour. We genuinely want you to share Puffin with everyone who could benefit.
