After-School Pickup in Maple Ridge: What a Babysitter Actually Needs to Do It

The single most common ongoing childcare arrangement in Maple Ridge is not a full-time nanny. It is somebody collecting a child at 3:00 PM and holding the fort until a parent gets home.

It is also the arrangement families are most likely to set up on a handshake and a rough idea, because it sounds simple. It is simple. It has about six moving parts, and every one of them is worth settling before week one rather than during it.

The geography is the hard part

Maple Ridge is wide. It runs from the river at Hammond and Haney out to Albion, Silver Valley and Websters Corners, and the school your child attends is not necessarily near the house you live in.

That makes the 3:00 PM pickup a genuine drive rather than a walk to the corner, and it produces the single hard requirement: for most Maple Ridge after-school arrangements, the caregiver needs a vehicle. A candidate who drives turns a difficult school run into an ordinary one. A candidate who does not is limited to the small number of home-and-school pairings that happen to line up with transit.

What it costs

After-school pickup and care is $36/hr, with the standard three-hour minimum, and every child in your home is included at no extra charge — two children at pickup is the same booking as one.

Three hours is usually the right shape anyway: a 3:00 PM pickup running to 6:00 PM covers the drive, the snack, the homework and the gap before a parent is home.

There is no travel surcharge and no zone pricing. Websters Corners and Hammond bill identically, and neither costs more than a Burnaby booking. The distance affects who is a sensible match, never what you pay.

The six things to settle before week one

1. Who is authorised to collect. Schools will want this in writing, in advance, and it is the thing most likely to derail day one. Sort it with the school before the first pickup, not at 3:05 PM on the day.

2. What happens on an early dismissal. Pro-D days, half days, and the ones that arrive by newsletter in a week you were busy. Decide now whether the arrangement flexes or whether you cover those separately.

3. The route and the car seat. If a car seat is needed, whose is it and where does it live. This is a five-minute conversation that becomes a forty-minute problem if left.

4. Snack and dinner. Whether the caregiver feeds them, what, and where it comes from. Ordinary either way; unpleasant if assumed.

5. Homework, or not. "Supervise" and "help" and "leave it for the parent" are three different jobs. Pick one out loud.

6. What happens when you are late. You will be late. Agree in advance what that looks like, rather than improvising it in traffic. Booking versus placing
