Babysitter in Langley: It's Two Municipalities, and That Changes Your Search
An address in "Langley" could be in either of two separate municipalities. It confuses forms, filters and search results constantly — and it matters much less than it looks, for one specific reason.
Langley is two municipalities with one name. The City of Langley is a small urban core; the Township of Langley wraps around it and runs from Walnut Grove down to Aldergrove, taking in Willoughby, Fort Langley, Murrayville and Brookswood.
Residents know this. Search forms, listing filters and drop-down menus frequently do not, which produces a specific and avoidable kind of frustration when you are trying to find childcare.
Where it actually bites
Listing sites treat them as separate places. Filter for one and you may not see candidates in the other, even when they are twelve minutes apart. A Walnut Grove family searching "City of Langley" can end up looking at a fraction of who is available.
Caregivers describe themselves inconsistently. Someone in Willoughby might write "Langley", "Langley Township", "Willoughby" or "Walnut Grove area" — four labels, one person, and only some of them match your filter.
Distances are counter-intuitive. The Township is large. Aldergrove to Walnut Grove is a real drive; Willoughby to the City core is not. "Langley to Langley" tells you nothing useful about the commute.
Why it matters less with us

Name the neighbourhood. "Willoughby" or "Brookswood" tells a search far more than "Langley" does. Commute is the variable that decides whether an arrangement survives past month four, and a search that knows where you actually are will not present someone forty minutes away.
Say whether driving is required. Willoughby and Walnut Grove are newer, denser family housing where it is often optional. Toward Aldergrove and the rural south of the Township it usually is not.
Give the real school run. Langley's family housing and its schools are not always in the same part of the Township, and a 3:00 PM pickup that crosses it is a different job from one three blocks away. After-school care is $36/hr and the pickup is part of the booking — but only if it was described accurately.
