Booking a Babysitter or Nanny for a Birthday Party

Most events have a few children in a crowd of adults. A children's birthday party inverts that completely: everyone is a child, they arrive at once, and the host is outnumbered from the first doorbell.

It is also the event people are least likely to think of hiring help for, because it is at home and it is only two hours. Then it is two hours and eleven children and somebody's shoe is in the cake.

What a party nanny actually does

Not entertainment. This is the distinction worth getting right before you book.

An entertainer — magician, face painter, soft-play host — runs an activity. They are performing to the group, and while they are performing they are not tracking who went upstairs, who is not eating because of an allergy, or who has quietly become overwhelmed and needs ten minutes somewhere quiet.

A party nanny does the supervision underneath the party: watching the room, handling the toilet trips, spotting the child who is not coping, managing the transitions that are actually the hard part — arrival, cake, presents, departure. If you have an entertainer, the nanny is what lets you actually watch your child enjoy it.

How many you need

Event nannies are staffed by age points, not headcount, because a room of eight-year-olds and a room of eight toddlers are not the same job:

For a home birthday party, the honest note is that the point count is a floor. A party is higher-intensity than a wedding reception, because every child is awake, sugared and in the same two rooms.

What it costs

$40/hr per nanny, with a four-hour minimum per day.

So a two-hour party still books four hours — and most hosts find the extra two hours are the useful ones, covering setup before and the wreckage after rather than being wasted. Two nannies for a four-hour block is $320.

Past eight hours in a day the rate is $60/hr per nanny, which a birthday party will not reach.

The three moments that actually go wrong

Arrival. Everyone comes at once, parents linger or do not, and you are trying to greet adults while eleven children disperse into your house. This is the single best argument for having someone whose whole job is the children.

Cake and presents. Concentrated, emotional, and the classic moment for one child to melt down out of sight of every adult.

Departure. Matching children to the correct adults, and to their correct shoes and party bags. Worth having someone tracking it who is not also saying goodbye to guests.

What to tell us when you book

Ages, and honestly — the point count depends on it. Whether it is indoors, outdoors or both. Any allergies or medical needs, which are collected per child as part of the booking so a caregiver arrives briefed rather than improvising. Whether there is an entertainer, so the nanny knows where the supervision boundary sits. And whether any child needs a quieter space, which is worth arranging in advance rather than inventing on the day.

Practicalities

Booked and paid online, 24 hours' notice minimum, and no same-day booking. First-time in-home bookings also need photo ID verification reviewed by an administrator — quick, but not something to leave to the morning of the party.
