Respite Care in BC: For the Person Doing the Caring
Family carers book care for their parent constantly and for themselves almost never. Respite is the service that exists for you — and the reason it goes unused is not cost.
Every service in this cluster is arranged around the person receiving care. This one is not. Family respite relief is arranged around you.
That difference sounds administrative. It is the whole point, and it is why respite is the most under-booked thing Puffin offers.
What it actually is
$42/hr, three-hour minimum, in your family member's own home. A certified Health Care Assistant steps into the routine you have already built — your transfer method, your medication schedule, your way of handling the difficult hour — so that you can leave.
Not so that a task list gets done. So that you can leave.
It is the same rate as HCA support because it is the same certified caregiver doing the same work. The difference is not the skill level. It is who the booking is for.
Why carers do not book it
The cost is rarely the real reason. The reasons people actually give:
"It feels like giving up." It is the opposite. The carers who last are the ones who built relief into the arrangement early. The ones who stop are the ones who ran until something broke.
"They only want me." Often true, and it does not change what happens when you are ill. A family member who has only ever been cared for by you has no tolerance built for anyone else — which is an argument for starting sooner, not later.
"I'd only use it for something important." A nap is important. The threshold people apply to their own relief is far higher than the one they would apply to anyone else's.
"I wouldn't know what to do with the time." Common, and not a reason to skip it. The first few blocks often get spent on errands. That is fine and it is still relief.
What makes it work
A standing weekly block beats occasional rescue. The same afternoon each week, with the same caregiver where scheduling allows. Your family member gets used to them; you get a break you can plan around rather than one you have to justify.
Book it before the crisis. Respite arranged during an emergency is arranged badly, with whoever is free, for someone who has never met the person. Respite arranged in advance means the caregiver already knows the routine when you need them at short notice.
Hand over properly once, not repeatedly. The first visit should include the real briefing — the routine, what goes wrong and when, what actually calms things down. A caregiver comes back with a handover brief compiling what they tracked while you were out, which is also how you find out what your own routine looks like from outside.
Say what the time is for. "I need to sleep" and "I have an appointment" are handled differently. Nobody will think less of you for the first one.
If you are also arranging care for them
Respite sits alongside the other two rather than replacing them. HCA or companion care covers which of those your family member needs; this is the third booking, and it is yours.
A common shape: HCA mornings for personal care, companion afternoons for company, and a standing respite block so the primary carer gets a fixed, defended piece of the week.
Practicalities
24 hours' notice minimum, booked online. Caregivers are Puffin employees — payroll, WorkSafeBC and liability are ours. Delivered hours count toward the loyalty ledger: ten earn a free hour, and respite hours count like any other.
HCAs do not perform nursing procedures or anything requiring a registered nurse. If what is needed is clinical, that is a health service rather than this booking.
Common questions
- What is respite care for family caregivers?
- Care booked around the carer rather than the person being cared for. A certified Health Care Assistant steps into the routine you have already established — your transfers, your medication schedule, your way of handling the hard part of the day — so that you can work, sleep, travel or simply leave the house. Puffin's family respite relief is $42/hr with a three-hour minimum.
- Why is respite the same price as HCA support?
- Because it is the same certified caregiver doing the same work. The difference is not skill level or task list — it is who the booking exists for. Companion care at $38/hr is arranged around the person receiving it; respite at $42/hr is arranged around you, which is why it is staffed by an HCA rather than a companion caregiver.
- Can I book respite regularly or only in emergencies?
- Either, and regular works considerably better. A standing weekly block — the same afternoon, the same caregiver where scheduling allows — means your family member gets used to them and you get a break you can plan around. It also means that when an emergency does come, the caregiver already knows the routine instead of meeting it cold.
- Do respite hours count toward the free-hour loyalty credit?
- Yes. Family respite relief is a qualifying service, so delivered respite hours count toward the ten-hour threshold that earns a free hour, exactly like HCA support or companion care hours.
