Babysitters and Nannies in Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta: One City, Three Searches

Most municipalities are one place. Delta is three, and they do not run into each other.

North Delta sits up against Surrey. Ladner and Tsawwassen are south, past the farmland and through the tunnel. Nobody thinks of these as one town, and for childcare purposes they are not one market either.

This makes no difference to what you pay and a real difference to how long a search takes — so here is the honest version rather than the tidy one.

The rate is identical. Genuinely.

Coverage is city-wide and explicitly includes all three communities, at the same rates, with no travel surcharge for the longer drives.

Hourly childcare is $32/hr for children 12 months and over, $38/hr where a child under 12 months is present, $36/hr for after-school pickup, three-hour minimum, every child in the home included. A Tsawwassen booking and a North Delta booking are the same price. Nanny placement is $500 under three months or $1,000 for three months or longer, wherever in Delta you are.

That is worth stating firmly because families in Ladner and Tsawwassen are used to being quoted extra for the tunnel. Not here.

The timeline is not identical, and we will say so

North Delta draws on the same candidate pool as Surrey, which is the largest local pool of any municipality Puffin covers. Searches there tend to move at the faster end of the usual range.

Ladner and Tsawwassen sit south of the tunnel with a smaller local pool, and a search there can take longer than the standard 7–10 business days for matched candidates.

We would rather tell you that at the start than at the end. A placement search that quietly runs to week four with no explanation is worse than one that began with "this is likely to take a bit longer, here is why."

Why the tunnel matters more than the distance

It is not really about kilometres. Ladner to North Delta is not far in a straight line.

It is that the tunnel is a chokepoint with a schedule of its own. A caregiver who takes it twice a day is exposed to something that is fine at 10:00 AM and completely different at 4:30 PM. A commute that works for a mid-morning booking may not work for the 3:00 PM school run, and the same person could reasonably say yes to one and no to the other.

Which means: give the real hours when you book, not just the location. "Tsawwassen, weekday afternoons" is a materially different ask from "Tsawwassen, weekday mornings", and the second one has a much larger pool behind it.

What to do with this

In North Delta — proceed normally. The pool is deep, the standard 7–10 business days is realistic, and a caregiver who does not drive is often still workable.

In Ladner or Tsawwassen — start earlier than you think you need to, especially for a placement, and lead with the schedule rather than the postcode. A vehicle is usually needed. If you need something at short notice, hourly childcare's 24-hour booking window is the right tool; a placement is not.

Anywhere in Delta — say which of the three you are in. "Delta" on its own is the least useful thing you can write, because it covers three separate search problems.
