What Happens If Your Postpartum Support Worker Is Sick?

You have not slept in four days, tonight is the night, and at 9:00 PM your support worker calls in sick. Here is exactly what happens next — including the part we cannot guarantee.

Nobody asks this question while booking. Everybody thinks about it at 9:00 PM on the night it happens.

You have not slept properly in four days. Tonight is the night you finally get to. And the phone rings.

What happens with Puffin

We work to find you a replacement as quickly as possible. That is the first move and usually the outcome — a caregiver pool exists partly so that one person's bad luck is not automatically your bad night.

If we cannot find a suitable replacement in time, you get a full refund. Not a credit, not a rebooking obligation. A refund.

Either way, the cost of a caregiver's cancellation never falls on you. You are not charged for a shift that did not happen, and you are not charged more because the replacement was arranged at short notice.

What we do not promise

Worth being straight about, because a promise that cannot be kept is worse than an honest limit.

We do not guarantee a replacement. We guarantee the effort and we guarantee the refund. On a night with several caregivers unavailable, or for a booking with narrow requirements — a specific language, a particular kind of experience — there may be nobody suitable free at 9:00 PM. "Suitable" is doing real work in that sentence: sending somebody who is merely available, rather than somebody appropriate, is not a service.

A replacement may not be the person you know. Continuity matters, especially overnight, and losing it for a night is a genuine loss rather than a technicality. We would still rather send a good stranger than nobody.

Why this is the question to ask any provider

This is the structural difference between an agency and an individual, and it is not about quality.

An excellent independent doula who wakes up with norovirus has no bench. That is arithmetic, not a failing — one person cannot cover themselves. If you engage someone directly, their sick day is your sick night, and the fallback is whatever you can arrange yourself at short notice while recovering from birth.

An agency's answer should be specific: do they attempt a replacement, what happens to your money if they cannot, and who tells you. Vagueness on this question is itself informative. Agency vs. independent doula covers the broader comparison.

What you can do to make cover easier

Book earlier than the minimum. 24 hours is the floor, not the ideal. More notice means more room to solve a problem.

Say which requirements are genuine. Every must-have narrows who can cover. If a language preference is a strong preference rather than a necessity, saying so honestly widens the bench considerably on the night it matters.

Book a block rather than single nights where you can. A caregiver assigned to a run of nights knows your baby, and a run is easier to cover partially than a single critical night is to replace entirely.

Tell us what the night is for. "I need to not wake up" and "I would like help" get treated differently when we are deciding how hard to push on a replacement.

The wider point

Most of what an agency sells is invisible on a good night. On a good night an agency and an independent look identical, and the independent is usually cheaper.

The difference shows up on the bad night — which, with a newborn in the house, arrives more often than anyone plans for.

Common questions

What happens if my postpartum caregiver cancels?
Puffin works to find you a replacement as quickly as possible. If we cannot find a suitable replacement in time, you receive a full refund. Either way the cost of a caregiver's cancellation never falls on you — you are not charged for a shift that did not happen, and not charged extra because cover was arranged at short notice.
Does Puffin guarantee a replacement caregiver?
We guarantee the effort and the refund, not the replacement. On a night when several caregivers are unavailable, or for a booking with narrow requirements, there may be nobody suitable free at short notice — and sending someone merely available rather than appropriate is not a service. We would rather state that limit than promise something we cannot always deliver.
Will I get the same caregiver every night?
Requests for the same caregiver are ordinary and worth making, particularly overnight where continuity means someone already knows your baby's pattern. It cannot be absolute, because people get ill and take holidays. Booking a block of nights rather than scattered single nights makes continuity considerably more likely.
How much notice does a postpartum booking need?
24 hours minimum, booked and paid online; same-day is not available through the form. More notice than the minimum is genuinely worth giving, because it leaves room to solve a problem if the assigned caregiver cannot come. Booking before the birth, when you can, removes the hardest arrangement from the hardest week.
