What Postpartum Support Costs in BC — and What Overnight Care Actually Involves
Daytime postpartum support is $38/hr with a three-hour minimum. Overnight is $42/hr from 10 PM to 6 AM — $336 for a full night, during which the specialist stays awake and you do not.
Daytime postpartum support is **$38 an hour**, with a three-hour minimum. Overnight is **$42 an hour**, and the shift runs **10:00 PM to 6:00 AM** — eight hours, **$336** a night.
The number most parents stall on is the overnight one. It is also the one that buys the thing you cannot buy any other way, which is a night of actual sleep.
What an overnight shift actually covers
Not "keeping an ear out." The specialist is **awake and attentive the whole night**, and the shift includes:
That last one earns its place. You wake up to a written record of what happened while you slept, which is what makes the handover work and what your midwife or paediatrician will actually ask you about.
If you are breastfeeding and want to do the feeds yourself, that still works — you get woken for the feed and handed a fed, changed, re-settled baby afterwards, instead of doing the ninety minutes on either side.
What daytime support covers
Different job. At $38/hr with a three-hour minimum, a daytime shift includes:
Daytime is where recovery happens. Overnight is where sleep happens. Families who can only do one usually need to be honest about which of the two is currently breaking them.
Working out your number
A three-hour daytime shift is **$114**. Two a week is **$228**, roughly **$988 a month**.
One overnight is **$336**. Two a week is **$672**. Every night for the first fortnight is **$4,704** — a real number, and one worth seeing before you plan around it.
A pattern that works well and costs less than people expect: two overnights a week for the first six weeks, on the nights before your hardest days. **$672 a week**, and you are never more than three nights from a full one.
When to book it
Book before the birth if you can. Postpartum specialists are matched, not dispatched, and the six-week window is the busiest thing in your year to organise from the middle of.
The 24-hour minimum notice applies here as it does everywhere, but "we need someone tonight" is the hardest request to fill well. If you are reading this at 34 weeks, that is the right time.
