In-home pediatric care is coming to Puffin Services
SURREY, B.C. — Puffin Services is preparing to offer in-home pediatric support for children across 16 municipalities in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. The service will include speech-language support, occupational therapy support and behaviour intervention, delivered in the family's own home.
Pediatric support is not available yet. Families who would like to hear when it opens in their area can register their interest on the pediatric care page now. Registering is free and carries no obligation.
What Puffin will offer
Puffin plans to offer three kinds of in-home support:
Who will supervise the work
Each specialist will work under a supervisor listed on BC's Registry of Autism Service Providers (RASP). Speech-language support will be supervised by a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapy support by an occupational therapist, and behaviour intervention by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst. The speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists will also be registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC.
The registry matters for more than reassurance. BC's autism funding for children under six can only be spent on RASP-listed professionals, and on behaviour interventionists supervised by one.
Sessions at home, without switching therapists
Sessions will be one-on-one in the family's home, built around the child's goals and daily routine. Parents will be able to watch the whole session rather than hearing a summary at the door, and skills will be practised in the rooms where the child actually uses them.
Families will not have to switch therapists. Where a child already has a therapist or consultant, Puffin's specialists will be able to work alongside them, following their plan and reporting back to them. A family will not have to leave a clinician who is working for their child in order to change where sessions happen.
Funding
Eligible funding sources will be accepted. Families who want to understand how BC autism funding works before they register can read Puffin's guide to BC autism funding.
The people who will come to your home
Specialists will be Puffin employees. Each one will have a vulnerable sector criminal record check before their first session, be certified in their field, and be local to the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. The plan is continuity: the same specialist will stay with a child, rather than a rotation of new faces.
How to register
Families can register on the pediatric care page. Puffin will contact registered families as soon as pediatric support is available in their municipality. Registering costs nothing and does not commit a family to booking.
