Choosing Senior Care in Surrey: What to Sort Out First

Surrey is the biggest municipality Puffin covers and the one with the largest local caregiver pool. For senior care that matters in a specific way: continuity is easier to schedule here than almost anywhere else we work, and continuity is the thing that decides whether senior care works at all.

Here is what to sort out first.

Which of the three services you are actually starting with

Three things, three rates, and families frequently begin with the wrong one:

Companion care — $38/hr. For someone managing physically but alone more than is good for them. Conversation, accompanied transport to appointments or groceries, light household help, walks.

HCA support — $42/hr. Certified Health Care Assistants, for hands-on personal care: safe transfers, bathing, dressing and toileting, medication reminders and symptom logging, condition-specific meals, and behaviour pacing for dementia and Alzheimer's.

Family respite relief — $42/hr. For when *you* are the one providing the care.

All three carry a three-hour minimum. HCA or companion care is the full decision guide; the short version is that if you are unsure, start with HCA, because an HCA can do everything companion care covers and not the reverse.

What Surrey specifically changes

Not the price. There is no Surrey rate, no zone pricing between Whalley and South Surrey, and no travel surcharge. A visit in Cloverdale and a visit in Newton are billed identically, and identically to a visit in Chilliwack.

Continuity is more achievable. The largest candidate pool of any municipality we cover means requesting the same caregiver each visit is more often schedulable here. Ask for it explicitly — it is an ordinary request, and with dementia it is close to essential, because a new person in the house every visit undoes much of the benefit for someone with memory loss.

Distance across the city is real. Surrey is large. A caregiver who lives twenty-five minutes from your parent is a more durable arrangement than one crossing the whole city in rush hour, particularly for an early-morning personal care visit. Give the actual neighbourhood rather than "Surrey" when you book.

Language matching is ordinary, not exceptional. Surrey's candidate pool is linguistically broad and requesting a caregiver who shares your parent's first language is a normal search criterion. Say it at the start. A narrower requirement means a smaller pool and possibly a longer wait, and we will tell you honestly which.

What to settle at the first visit

The routine, in detail. Not the summary — the actual sequence, including what goes wrong and when, and what calms it down. This is the single highest-value twenty minutes in the whole arrangement.

Medication: reminders, not administration decisions. HCAs provide reminders, schedule compliance tracking and symptom logging on the schedule already in place. They do not make clinical decisions.

What is out of scope. HCAs do not perform nursing procedures, wound care, or anything requiring a registered nurse. Knowing the boundary in advance means you know who to call when something is medical rather than difficult.

Access. Keys, buzzer codes, who else has them, and who to call if nobody answers the door. Sort this before it is a problem at 8:00 AM.

Who the caregiver reports to. If several siblings are involved, name one point of contact. Care arrangements coordinated by committee degrade quickly.

Starting small is normal

Most Surrey families do not begin with a full schedule. A few hours a week — one companion afternoon, or one HCA morning — is a completely ordinary start, and it lets everyone find out what is actually needed rather than guessing at it.
