Spring Break and Pro-D Days in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley: Every School District's Calendar

The 12 school districts from Vancouver to Hope, each linked to its official calendar, what holds every year, and what covering spring break costs.

Spring break is the longest stretch of the school year that most working parents have to cover, and it lands on much the same weeks across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley in British Columbia. Here is where each district publishes its calendar, what holds every year, and what covering the time off costs.

What holds every year

  • Most districts take two weeks in March. Some label both weeks spring break. Others, like Surrey in recent years, schedule a week of break followed by a week of school closure days. For a parent, that is two weeks either way.
  • Easter moves, and it can move the return date. Good Friday and Easter Monday are statutory holidays. In years when Easter falls in late March they land at the end of the break or just after it, so check whether the first day back is a Monday or a Tuesday.
  • Pro-D days are not shared. Professional development days differ by district and, in several districts, by school. Vancouver's calendar notes that many of its schools set their own. Your school's calendar is the one that counts, not the district's.

    • What covering the time off costs

    Care at home during the break is booked by the day, at the same rates in every district:

  • A full weekday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM: $256. Every child in the home is included.
  • One week, Monday to Friday: $1,280. Both weeks: $2,560.
  • Three days a week, for families splitting the break with a partner, grandparents or a camp: $768 a week.
  • A single Pro-D day is the same full-day booking: $256.

    • Online bookings need 24 hours' notice, but spring break dates are known months ahead, and so are everyone else's. Book the days as soon as your plan is set.
